A number of readers have inquired about the resources available to the public. We decided to compile a list of the various resources we find to be helpful. Feel free to bookmark this post so they will be only a mouse click away.
We will start with contact numbers for SCDC and the individual institutions.
You can search for South Carolina's active inmates HERE. The inmate search in this state is rather pathetic. If you don't have an inmate number or a name this search site is useless. We would like to see South Carolina improve their inmate search capability to match that of the state of Georgia. That Georgia inmate search is awesome. With the Georgia site you can search active and inactive offenders, you can search by institution and a variety of other search data.
On par with the inmate search (which is pretty piss-poor) is the Sex Offender Search at SLED. This also needs a lot of improvement. We found this search resource to be pretty much useless.
You might want to visit the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon services once in a while. This link will take you to their contact form.
Rather than post links to every case search site we use we think it will be easier to post a link to the South Carolina Judicial Department page that links to each county. All you have to do is click whatever county on the map you might be interested in. Those links will take you the individual case search site for each county. Some are better than others. What we have found so far is that Charleston County's site provides much more information than the other counties. Bond information is not included on many of the sites and quite a few of them don't seem to be in a hurry to update information. Charleston County is the exception. That search site seems to be updated on a daily basis.
If you are interested in reading up on the offenses our thugs are charged with we recommend the South Carolina Legislature Online site. Understanding the numbers used to identify an offense makes things a lot easier.
Example: 16-3-10 Murder
16 = Title
3 = Chapter
10 = Offense
At the page linked above just click on Title 16, then Chapter 3, then scroll down to 10. On the chapter listing page you can choose to open the chapter as an .html or Microsoft Word file. If you right click the link to the MS Word file and choose "Save Link As" you can download that chapter to your computer or smart phone.
We hope you find this short rundown of research and information resources helpful. Let us know if you find something we haven't listed and we will include it in updates.
